Knee Pain Arthritis – 3 Ways to Treat Knee Pain Arthritis

Janice CarsonJanice Carson

Knee pain arthritis is a common complain among the American population. In fact, there are nearly 40 million people with arthritis in the United States alone, many of whom suffer from extreme knee pain. Fortunately, there are many different ways to treat knee pain arthritis. Although many unconventional methods are still met with skepticism, arthritis sufferers no longer have to rely exclusively on medication for treatment. Doctors still recommend using medication for short-term pain relief and initial knee pain arthritis treatment, however. Three ways to treat knee pain arthritis include medication, acupuncture, and electrical nerve stimulation.

Knee Pain ArthritisDoctors prescribe several different types of medication for relief from knee pain arthritis. Some are general pain relievers, while others target specific types of arthritis. Your medical history will also play a major role in deciding which drug is best for you. The most common types of drugs used for knee pain arthritis include NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and analgesics. These are further separated into traditional NSAIDs, selective NSAIDs, narcotic analgesics, and non-narcotic analgesics, respectively. NSAIDs relieve knee pain arthritis by reducing inflammation, but can cause stomach damage. Selective NSAIDs provide stomach protection and inflammation reduction. Analgesics are simply painkillers and include non-narcotics such as Tylenol as well as narcotics such as Morphine, Codeine, and Vicodin. These drugs provide stellar pain relief but tend to be addictive.

Acupuncture, though it may seem a little odd, is also effective in providing relief from knee pain arthritis that it is regulated by the FDA. Acupuncture is a technique in which needles are inserted at specific points of the body. The needles are thought to stop pain messages from reaching the brain. Acupuncture provides short-term and long-term knee pain arthritis relief. While some people might have to go through 5 or more sessions before seeing results, others experience significant pain relieve after the first visit. Best of all, many insurance companies cover the cost of acupuncture.

Electrical nerve stimulation is another option to consider if you have knee pain arthritis. An electrical stimulation procedure uses an electrical current to strengthen the muscles around your knee joint and relieve joint pain. If you prefer a more portable version, you might think about buying a TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) unit. These pocket-size machines can send electrical current throughout your body to block pain. Although you will need doctor supervision, many people consider these devices worth the hassle. Finding knee pain relief might be easier than you think.
