Joint Pain Reliever – What Are the Benefits and Drawbacks?

Janice CarsonJanice Carson

As an individual suffering from daily or severe joint pain, many patients have tried numerous types and methods to find the perfect joint pain reliever for their situation. These might include joint pain relievers such as over the counter ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin. However, some patients would prefer a natural joint pain reliever such as willow bark, licorice, or celery seeds. Whether patients prefer natural dietary supplements, an over the counter joint pain reliever or they opt to get a prescription from their physician, what works best for each individual will depend on the source of their joint pain, its severity, and what other methods of pain relief they employ.

Joint Pain RelieverThere are benefits and drawbacks to every joint pain reliever on the market today. Numerous natural dietary supplements and herbal remedy compounds make excellent joint pain reliever solutions. However, some of these natural supplements and herbal remedies can aggravate joint pain if the right species of plant or herb is not used, or if correct dosages are not followed. Likewise, a joint pain reliever that primarily treats inflammation will not provide the right relief for nerve related pain. Additionally, herbal supplements have their own side effects and interactions with other compounds that individuals should be aware of before beginning treatment.

The same holds true for a joint pain reliever found on the grocery store shelf or prescribed by a physician. Each joint pain reliever has its own specific benefits and drawbacks. A joint pain reliever that works well for one patient might not work as well on another, depending on the cause and severity of their joint pain. For example, naproxen might work well for someone suffering only minor arthritis pain. However, the same naproxen tablet may not have the desired joint pain reliever results for an individual with advanced rheumatoid arthritis. That individual may require a stronger prescription medication or even multiple joint pain reliever solutions.

Some individuals may find that a single joint pain reliever is not sufficient to manage their pain. For those individuals, a prescription joint pain reliever combined with herbal dietary supplements and physical therapy might prove more beneficial. This is often the case with more advanced arthritic conditions. For these individuals, it is merely a matter of time before joint pain reliever therapies no longer suffice and surgical intervention to replace worn out or severely degenerated joint components. For these individuals, traditional joint pain reliever solutions are simply not an effective treatment option due to the advance stage of their disease.
