Joint Pain and Fifth Disease – Symptoms, Prevention and Treatment

Have you heard of the illness called fifth disease? Fifth disease is caused by a virus called human parvovirus B19. Its medical term is ‘Erythema Infectiosum (EI). Fifth disease is more common in children aged from 5 to 14 years old. This disease is characterized by swelling joints and mild skin rashes all over the body particularly on the face. Since the rash on the face may seem like it had been slapped, this disease has also been called slapped cheek syndrome.

Symptoms & Signs

Though there are no specific symptoms of fifth disease, the following signs & symptoms occurred for 15%-30% of people who have this disease.

  • Fever – One of the symptoms of joint pain and fifth disease includes fever that comes with nasal congestion.
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Facial Rash
  • Joint pain
  • Swelling

Treatment

Though fifth disease is known to go away by itself, it is still essential that you are known for the things that could hasten relief. If you happen to acquire joint pain and fifth disease, you should drink lots of fluids. You can also take acetaminophen to help in reducing your fever. An example of this drug is Tylenol. It is also imperative that you make the habit of washing your hands regularly to ensure that you won’t spread the virus.

Prevention

The only way to prevent you from acquiring joint pain and fifth disease is to prioritize washing of hands. This is the best way to reduce the possibility of spreading this kind of disease to more people.

Fifth disease may not be as dangerous as other diseases. But you still need to take a lot of effort not to acquire it as it can also affect your daily routine and responsibility. Furthermore, it can also hinder you from performing your day to day obligations such as going to work or school. Fifth disease should never be taken for granted as it can lead to more dangerous diseases in the long run. Thus, ensuring that you are properly equipped with enough knowledge of this disease is vital.

Another important thing about this disease is it is more common in children than adults. So you must be more cautious for your children and teach them how to properly clean their hands in order for them not to catch this kind of disease.

Rashes may seem very common to children but it can definitely be prevented. With the help of enough knowledge about it, you can definitely say goodbye to it. Keep yourself away from this irritating rash by keeping a clean environment and by being more careful and meticulous when it comes to your hygiene.
