Fibromyalgia Origins Remain a Mystery

Fibromyalgia [Gk. fibro- tissue; myos- muscle; algos- pain] is defined by MediLexicon as “A common syndrome of chronic widespread soft-tissue pain accompanied by weakness, fatigue, and sleep disturbances”.

Fibromyalgia syndrome only occurs in one patient for every 73 individuals but the prevalence of this medical condition has reached between three to six million cases. Since its occurrence is generally and significantly large, it is safe to assume that fibromyalgia is a common chronic disorder. National Institutes of Health established the fact that 90% of fibromyalgia patients are middle-aged women although men and youngsters are also susceptible to the disease.

Scientists have been studying the causes of fibromyalgia for quite some time but the causes are still unknown. To characterize, fibromyalgia is regarded as a collection of clinical signs and symptoms that is typically related to arthritis. However, extensive researches suggest that this syndrome neither damages the joints nor cause them to inflame unlike arthritis and other joint problems.

Who is Most Likely to Have Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia Origins Remain a Mystery

The syndrome is genetic but patients who suffer from lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatic diseases and rheumatoid arthritis are very much prone to fibromyalgia.

Causal Factors Resulting to Fibromyalgia

Although the causes of fibromyalgia are not yet established, here are some circumstances that might lead to fibromyalgia.

  • Central nervous system disorders
  • Genetic regulations on pain receptions
  • Repetitive injuries
  • Stress and Physical or emotional trauma
  • Decreased level of brain neurotransmitter serotonin

People allude to the fact that it is arthritis-related because of the nature of pain felt but this is a scientific fallacy. On the other hand, notions that fibromyalgia is a rheumatic condition is quite correct. Unlike other pains, it does not result to destruction of muscles and tissues.

Early Diagnosis Through Fibromyalgia Manifestations

In general, chances that you will be diagnosed of fibromyalgia are high if you feel a widespread pain for the last few months. At least four quadrants of the body feel these muscle pains. In most cases, there are around 18 tender points throughout your body if you have fibromyalgia and occurrence of at least 11 of them is required to confirm that you have the syndrome.

We do not know yet what the causes of fibromyalgia are but here are some of the other basic things you should look after if you want to assert that you are suffering.

  • Extensive pain that causes tingling sensations in hands and feet
  • Headaches
  • Inconsistent sleeping pattern
  • Extreme cold and heat sensitivity
  • Blurry vision
  • Nausea
  • Jaw pains and morning stiffness
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Urinary problems and dysmenorrhea
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Skin diseases

Fibromyalgia has affected millions of people throughout the world and this lead to more scientific undertakings in order to fend off the increasing number of patients. People should not be afraid because the disease is not detrimental although it causes severe pains which can be countered by your doctor’s prescribed medicine.
