Bone and Joint Supplement – What Are Some Popular Ingredients in Bone and Joint Supplements?

Janice CarsonJanice Carson

There are many different types of bone and joint supplement products on the market, but not all work as they claim. At this time, the Food and Drug Administration has not approved an alternative bone and joint supplement products, but there are products that have worked for many to help alleviate the pain, inflammation and stiffness associated with arthritis. Some of the popular bone and joint supplements on the market contain glucosamine, chondroitin, shark cartilage, omega-3 fatty acids. Each has its own benefits and may work differently depending on the person and the type of joint pain they have.

Bone and Joint SupplementGlucosamine is a popular bone and joint supplement, and naturally occurs in the body to help build cartilage and the connective tissues around the joints. It also increases the production of glycosaminoglycans, which is a component of cartilage as well as improves the body’s use of sulfur, which is one of the main components is creating healthy cartilage. Research shows that glucosamine is an excellent bone and joint supplement because it may help slow the progress of osteoarthritis. Many times it is paired with chondroitin in popular bone and joint supplement products.

Chondroitin is in many popular bone and joint supplement products and like glucosamine naturally occurs in the body. It is a main component of cartilage. When taken as a bone and joint supplement daily, chondroitin helps with the absorption of fluids into connective tissues and provide joint cushion. It can also stop enzymes that cause the deterioration of cartilage and promote the creation of new cartilage. This along with glucosamine makes an excellent bone and joint supplement for those suffering with arthritis, with clinical studies showing positive effects for those who suffer with osteoarthritis.

Shark cartilage and omega-3 fatty acids are two other ingredients in bone and joint supplement products. The shark cartilage is sold in many bone and joint supplement products to help with both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Omega-3 fatty acids are added to bone and joint supplements to promote both bone and joint health, but no studies have proven its effectiveness for this. Omega-3 is found in seafood and fish. While it had been FDA approved for the treatment of high triglycerides, it has not been approved for bone and joint health. Some studies suggest taking a bone and joint supplement that is a combination of ingredients to better treat the pain, inflammation and stiffness of arthritis.
