Arthritis of the Spine – Understanding this Condition

Janice CarsonJanice Carson

Arthritis of the spine is a debilitating and painful condition that generally affects individuals who are over the age of 40. When left untreated, arthritis of the spine can lead to both physiological and psychological problems including muscle breakdown, weakness and even depression and anxiety. Individuals with arthritis of the spine often experienced excruciating pain that is sudden and they may even be unable to perform normal activities or be bedridden for extended periods of time. There are a number of causes for arthritis of the spine and the causes can vary from one person to another but calcium build up and degeneration are generally factors.

Arthritis of the SpineMost experts attribute arthritis of the spine to imbalances in an individual’s nutrition levels, hormone levels, stress levels and even poor posture which can lead to pain in the neck or back. Past surgeries and injuries can also lead to arthritis of the spine. An individual who has had nerves in their spine which are compacted or pinched may experience numbness or pain in the areas and arthritis of the spine may also be affected somewhat by bone spurs or herniated discs. Determining the exact cause of arthritis the spine will require an individual to discuss their condition with a physician.

An individual concerned with whether or not they are experiencing the beginning symptoms of arthritis of the spine should pay special attention to whether or not they experience any numbness or pain in the shoulders, head, neck or back. The intensity and frequency the symptoms can vary but consistent or regular pain should be discussed with a professional. Neck numbness is one of the most common symptoms and some individuals suffering from arthritis of the spine also experience numbness in the legs or arms. An individual may also find themselves urinating frequently or experiencing an urgent need to urinate due to arthritis of the spine.

In order to diagnose arthritis of the spine, a medical professional will need to provide an individual with a full physical examination. A doctor will also ask an individual a number of questions regarding their medical history and ask the person to perform exercises to determine whether or not their range of motion has been affected. Arthritis of the spine is often treated by restricting movement to the neck or back and with the use of common anti-inflammatory medications. Arthritis of the spine may also benefit from therapeutic exercises, electrical stimulation, the use of contacts or an ultrasound.
