Arthritis and Osteoporosis: Similarities and Differences

Janice CarsonJanice Carson

Bone problems are one of the drawbacks of aging. There are different problems of the bone that hit people aged 40 and above. Lifestyle is a factor that could greatly affect one’s health, and that includes the condition of the bone. Although bone problems may hit any people of any age, older people are more prone to damage and diseases as their bones have been under accumulated pressure and stress.

Arthritis and Osteoporosis: Similarities and DifferencesArthritis and osteoporosis are one of the most common bone problems that are experienced by people aged 40 and above. Since they are the most common, these two may have confused a lot of people. Truth be told, arthritis and osteoporosis are two different bone conditions, which have differences as well as similarities.

What Sets Osteoporosis Apart From Arthritis?

Loss of bone tissues is with the primary cause of osteoporosis, which results in less dense bones thus making them more fragile and at risk for fractures. Osteoporosis is dubbed as the “silent disease” as it usually has no symptoms, a condition that is usually not discovered until a fracture happens.

Arthritis, on the other hand, is a condition that affects areas where bones adjoin such as the hips, elbows, shoulders and knees. This disease involves the joints and tissues around them which in that case have been damaged usually due to overuse. There are different types of arthritis and one is osteoarthritis, the name appears to be a combination of the two diseases, which may have also caused the confusion between arthritis and osteoporosis.

The two bone problems differ in symptoms, with arthritis causing frequent pains and osteoporosis giving out no symptoms at all. They are also diagnosed and treated differently. It is also possible that one will have both arthritis and osteoporosis, the likelihood depends on different conditions. This often includes the type of arthritis the person is currently experiencing. Those with osteoarthritis are more likely to develop osteoporosis.

What Brings Arthritis and Osteoporosis Together?

Arthritis and osteoporosis share some similarities, for instance, both can only be managed but cannot be cured. That means, the treatments are only meant to alleviate the pain and slow down the damage of bone tissues and other involved parts. Coping strategies for both diseases also share similarities.

One may go through physical therapies or rehabilitation which mostly include exercise routines such as:

  • Low stress yoga
  • Low impact aerobics
  • Tai chi
  • Swimming
  • Walking

However, those with osteoporosis must avoid activities such as lifting weights, bending forward and other activities that involve twisting the spine. It is best to seek medical advice, as different conditions need different care and require different ways of dealing with them.

These are conditions that would surely take away some comfort from anyone, and could even debilitate the sufferer. As soon as one gets diagnosed with any arthritis or osteoporosis, it’s best to get proper treatments of the disease.
