Osteoarthritis Treatment – Pain Management Techniques

Kathy Martin

When you are receiving osteoarthritis treatments, you may need to learn some pain management techniques if your medication does not completely block your pain. There are all kinds of different techniques that you can add to your osteoarthritis treatment regimen, but the key is to find the one that works best for you. Your doctor or even some of your friends who are undergoing osteoarthritis treatment can give you advice about which techniques to try. Do not be discouraged if some of them do not work for you, though. Everyone’s body is different and will respond to different pain management methods.

Exercise is a popular form of pain management with osteoarthritis treatment. However, if you are not fond of the sweating and fatigue that can accompany exercise, never fear. Exercise that is included in osteoarthritis treatment does not have to be strenuous. Just moving enough to increase your circulation can lower your inflammation level. Your doctor can put together an exercise plan based on your fitness level as part of your osteoarthritis treatment. Once you get started, you may even find that you enjoy working out and want to increase your intensity level! Just be careful to not overdo it and cause yourself more pain.

Music is another effective form of pain management with osteoarthritis treatment. Researchers believe that music can stimulate the part of your brain that is in charge of releasing your body’s natural painkillers. Patients undergoing osteoarthritis treatment reported feeling less pain and depression if they listened to music for just an hour a day. Many people like to listen to music while they are working out. Just imagine how it could improve your osteoarthritis treatment if you listen to music while doing your exercises! You can listen to your all-time favorite band, or use this as an opportunity to broaden your musical horizons.

Meditation has become a more common form of pain management with osteoarthritis treatment in recent years. This technique is simple enough to learn and can be very effective. Taking some time out of your day to relax and just focus on your body and imagine it healing can help your osteoarthritis treatment progress in a positive way. For example, if your doctor has approved a walking program for your osteoarthritis treatment, use that time to focus on your body’s movements as you walk. This will calm your thought pattern and reduce stress, thus lessening your pain.
