Arthritis in the Knee – The Symptoms of Arthritis in the Knee

Sharon Conroy

Arthritis in the knee can be very painful and prevent you from being able to do the things you love. But, more importantly, progressive arthritis in the knee can make things like getting out of a chair or stepping in and out of the shower extremely painful and difficult. If arthritis in the knee is caught early enough, there are changes to your lifestyle that the doctor can suggest and measures that can be taken to help slow the progress of the disease and to live more of your years as you want to.

Arthritis in the knee is a degenerative disease. That means that there are subtle signs that arthritis in the knee is starting that will get increasingly worse. It could take several years before the symptoms start to affect the way you live, and it could be decades before any real crippling effects occur. But you can put that all off by learning to recognize the tell-tale signs of arthritis in the knee. One of the signs that arthritis is setting in on your knee is if your experience a stiffness or swelling in the knee that would make it difficult to move. This can come and go which makes it easy to ignore. But the first time you experience it for no apparent reason, you need to get to the doctor.

As arthritis in the knee progresses, it gets more and more difficult to move the knee on a regular basis. The most common time for people to experience the symptoms of arthritis in the knee is in the morning after hours of their knee being immobile. In most cases, stretching will get rid of the morning stiffness and many people tend to ignore it. But it could be a sign that arthritis in the knee is starting to settle in, and it is something that you need to discuss with your doctor on your next visit.

Arthritis in the knee can have a variety of effects on the body. A change in the air pressure outside can sometimes make the arthritis in the knee flare up worse than normal. In some cases, arthritis in the knee has the exact opposite effect you would expect as it can make your knee feel weak and almost cause it to buckle as you walk. If you feel any strange sensations in your knee or notice anything unusual about the way your knee feels or acts, then you need to get a hold of your doctor immediately and have your knee joint examined.
